@ The 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture

An evening of conversation between Ariana Kalliga & Jenny Marketou, culminating in a collective reading dedicated to the waters of Eleusina.

On Thursday, June 22nd, we had the pleasure of gathering for “Co-designing a Hatchery: Speculative Design, Borders and Ecological Justice”, a public discussion at the Canteen Art Hub in Eleusina, Greece.

Exploring the theoretical framework behind Jenny Marketou’s project Futuring Waters commissioned for 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture, we touched upon speculative design methodologies, interspecies care and ethics, local water rights, and oysters as restorative ecosystems in Jenny Marketou’s year-long interdisciplinary research.

Fielding questions from the participants and local residents of Eleusina, we discussed the history of Eleusina’s industrialization, the loss and revival of local water species including oysters, and the significance of citizen science, local outreach and environmental advocacy. The evening concluded with a reading of Natalie Diaz’s poetry, as participants left behind traces of their notes, questions & annotations.

A huge thank you to each of the participants for their contributions and to Jenny Marketou for this warm invitation to continue our long-term dialogue.
